History and culture

Omsk region possesses a great tourist potential. Most attractive is the northern part of the region and the Krasnoyarsk-Chernoluchye zone, where the environment favours recreational activities not just in summer, but in winter time also. History of Omsk begins with erection of the First Omsk fortress on the left bank of the Om' river. It was done due to edict of Peter I on May 22, 1714, that ordered to arrange an expedition deep into Siberia with the purpose of finding the "gold sand" in Yerket. The group was led by lieutenant-colonel of guards Ivan Bukhgolts. After the unsuccessful campaign two small reduits were built in 1716 in the firth of the Om' river for protection of men and equipment. The reduits were located as follows: the triangular one - on the place of today's River Terminal and the square one - opposite the entrance to Yubileynyi bridge. Then in 1717 the first Omsk fortress was constructed.

There is a lot of historical and architectural monuments in Omsk that create the original style of the city combining the elements of various architecture styles - Siberian Baroque, Renaissance, Russian Classicism.
