The Cathedral of Christ the Savior
The cathedral was built on the orders of Emperor Alexander I as a symbol of gratitude to God for saving Russia in the Patriotic War of 1812 and in commemoration of the Russian army's victory over Napoleon.
We now approach the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Look at this magnificent five-domed church and imagine that a swimming pool was in this place until just recently.
The first design of the cathedral was offered by K.Vitberg but it was never realised because of the death of Emperor Alexander I. His brother emperor Nikolai I did not forget Alexander's wish to build a church and accepted the plan proposed by architect Konstantin Ton who offered to erect a temple in the "Russian-Byzantine style", i.e. based on Old Russian architecture traditions. The foundation of the cathedral was ceremonially laid on 10 September, 1839. It was built over 44 years and funded with voluntary public donations.
