The St. Tatyana Church

A colonnade of the graceful semi-rotunda of the church faces Mokhovaya St. This is an outhouse of Pashkov's former manor that housed the church of Moscow University.

In 1806, the Pashkovs leased the outhouse to the City Council to house the company of the Maddox Peter theatre that moved there from a burnt-out building in Teatralnaya Square. This is the place of birth of the Moscow Imperial Theatre that served as a cradle of the Bolshoi and Maly theatres. In the 1830s, the outhouse was renewed to house a university church. On the opening day of Moscow University in 1755 it had no church of its own so the thanksgiving service was celebrated in the Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Blessed Virgin on Red Square.

The Church of Saint Tatyana was consecrated on 5 April, 1791 still within the precincts of the university building erected by Kazakov. Catherine II herself paid her respects to the church by sending a gift - a rich sacristy. The university building burnt down completely in the fire of 1812; the only thing saved from the church was the old church plate. The day Napoleon's army left Moscow Father Iona, the university church prior, was the first Moscow priest to celebrate a thanksgiving service to Jesus the Savior in the Strastnoy Cloister.

In 1836, the Pashkov's outhouse was renovated to serve as St. Tatyana Church that was open till 1918. In Soviet times, the Student theatre of Moscow University showed its performances here; on 25 January, 1995, on Tatyana's day, the church of Moscow University was once again consecrated here.
