Omsk happened to be the last capital of Russian Empire. As a result of a take-over of November 18, 1918 Alexander Vasilyevich Kolchak, famous polar explorer and military leader, became the Chief Leader of Russia. After gaining the power, Kolchak established the Special Conference and Governmental Senate. He settled in the mansion of Batyushkin on Irtysh bank. Later Kolchak was tried and sentenced by the Revolutionary Committee of the Bolsheviks and shot down on February 7, 1920 after a short-time inquiry.

Military engineer, Hero of the Soviet Union, Dmitry Mikhailovich Karbyshev is also a graduate of Siberian cadet corps. Famous Russian artist Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel was born in Omsk. The fate of prominent Russian writer Theodor Mikhailovhch Dostoevsky is also associated with Omsk.
