Moscow State University

In front of the Manege is the famous house on Mokhovaya St. - this is the building of Moscow University, having the reputation of the best educational institution in Russia and one of the best in the world for more than two hundred years.

Russia's first university was created due to the initiative of Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov. On 12 (25) January, 1755, the memorial day of the saint and martyr Tatyana and the name day of Count I.I.Shuvalov's mother, the count submitted an application to empress Elizaveta Petrovna asking her to establish Moscow University. The empress signed an order that very day. Moscow always served as Russia's soul, now it was to become its thought. At the same time, a famous festival of Moscow students emerged: the feast day of St. Tatyana, and St. Tatyana became the patroness of Moscow University. This educational institution was initially opened in a reconstructed building of the Chemistry department in the place of today's Historical Museum (178). The Museum of Anthropology named for D. Anuchin(78) is located in the old building of MSU constructed in 1793 by design of M. Kazakov the famous architect.. The visitors of MSU Zoological Museum (79) are able to know the variety of our planet's animal world and abundant scientific collections.
