We Enter the Kremlin

Immediately to the left of the gates we see the Arsenal (52) established by Peter I in 1701 to serve as an armory. It also was to become a museum of military valor: the tsar issued an order requiring to gather "copper and iron cannons and various military insignias". Today, Russian cannons of the 16th - 17th centuries stand near the Arsenal walls.

The Senate (54) built by Matvey Kazakov in 1776 - 1788, is on the right. The Senate has the shape of a triangle with a large inner courtyard and a rotunda 25 meters in diameter that is crowned with a huge dome with the President's color. The dome is crowned with a gilded statue of George the Victorious. Senatskaya Square lies between the Arsenal and the Senate. In 1905, right on this spot a bomb was thrown at the coach of Grand Prince Sergey Alexandrovich, the uncle of emperor Nikolai II, by the terrorist I.Kalyaev. After her husband's death Grand Princess Elizaveta Fiodorovna founded a cloister - the Marpho-Mariinskaya convent on Bolshaya Ordynka.

In front of Senate Square there is a rather alien construction - the Palace of Congress (53), built in 1961.
