In 1907, Shchukin decided to present his collection to the city, and his wish was that it should be exhibited as a whole and not be split up. In 1909 the mansion opened its doors to the public.

In 1918 the house was nationalized and turned into a museum of modern western art where Shchukin was offered the positions of curator and guide. However, Sergey Ivanovich chose to leave the country and died in France.

In Znamensky side-street, in the ancient mansion of the Lopukhins, which is a monument of 17-19 centuries architecture, the N. Rerikh Museum and International Rerikh Center (90) are located.
