Novgorod region occupies the lands around Velikiy Novgorod (that means, in Russian, Great New City), extending southwards and eastwards from the city. Todays Novgorod region is just a small part of Novgorod republic that existed prior to annexation of Novgorod to Moscow state in 1478. In the Middle Ages all the Volkhov way, shores of the Neva and Gulf of Finland belonged to Novgorod. The Novgorod land lasted up to the Urals eastwards and up to the White sea northwards.
Novgorod region is located close to the two capitals - Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, that lets everyone to repeat Radischev's trip from Petersburg to Moscow. Good transportation to the two Russian megapolices, Baltic sea ports, countries of Western Europe and Scandinavia combined with the eleven-ages trading experience and hospitality of Novgorod inhabitants attract businessmen, art experts, writers, artists and tourists from all around the world.

In 2009 one of the oldest Russian city - Velikiy Novgorod - will celebrate its 1150 anniversary. First mention of this city in chronicles is almost simultaneous with first mention of Russia itself. This is the city where the oldest Russian church is located - Sophia cathedral built in 1045-1050.
