Monument to Peter I

After the Cathedral of Christ the Savior we pass over (98) the Moskva to Bersenevskaya quay. This is the strategic spot where the first Moscow monument to Peter I, the "grandfather" of the Russian navy, was erected in 1997 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Russian fleet's foundation.

It provoked much argument but now all the disputes are over, and Peter is looking sternly at the Moskva River. Behind the monument the oldest Moscow confectionery "Krasny Oktyabr" (100) is situated. It was established in 1850 by Ferdinand Theodore Einem who gave it his name - "Einem". The confectionery won a gold medal at the All-Russian industry and art exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896, which awarded it the right to put the National emblem of Russia on the wruppers. We can see the House on the Embankment (102) to the right of the bridge on Barsenevskaya Embankment. It was the home of famous revolutionaries, military leaders, academicians and writers. Many of them died during the years of Stalin's repressions. The house facade bears over a hundred plaques.

Also at Bersenevskaya quay the famous Moscow State Variety Theatre(102), founded in 1954 by Smirnov-Sokolsky the Russian Federation peoples' artist, is located since 1961.

We pass under the bridge to Bolotnaya square, in which a statuary composition by Mikhail Shemyakin "Children victims of adults' vices" (104) was presented in 2001 on the Day of Moscow. There are 15 statues in the bronze composition. Two golden statues of children playing blind Tom with their eyes seeled are surrounded by a roundelay of adult monsters. The three-meter-high allegoric monster have human corpses and heads of beasts and fishes. According to the author, famous sculptor Mikhail Shemyakin, that is a traditional way of presenting vices. We now face the Drainage (Vodootvodny) Canal. Let us walk through a public garden by the monument to I.Repin, a famous Russian painter, and cross the canal over a humpbacked bridge. We find ourselves in Zamoskvorechye. There were several settlements here in the 17th century; people living in one of them, Kadashevskaya sloboda, supplied the tsar's court with canvas and cloth.
